Westmoreland-Chloe E. Hitz, 96 formerly of Englewood, Dodge City and Hudson died Sunday evening, March 29th, 2009, at Westmoreland Community Care Home
Chloe Ella McCorkle Hitz was born August 18, 1912 in Wilmore, Kansas to Ora and Blanche McCorkle. Chloe married Martin Ashcraft from Protection, Kansas in 1929 and she later graduated high school in 1930. Chloe and Martin had four children, Nancy, Norma, Mel and Gwen. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1943 she married Ursal Hennigh. He passed away in 1949. In 1951 she married Roy Huffman, he preceded her in death in 1977. In 1980 she married Virigil Hitz, he also preceded her in 1989. In addition to her husbands, Chloe was also preceded in death by two beloved daughters Norma in 1993 and Nancy in 1997.
Chloe was a clerk in the Englewood Kansas Post Office before becoming postmaster. She served as postmaster for 17 years before retiring in 1974.
Survivors include: her son, Mel Ashcraft and his wife Gail of Atlanta, Georgia and their two daughters Adele and Andrea; her daughter Gwen Hashbarger and her husband John “Spike” and their children, Alan and wife Janell of Wamego, Kansas and children Bret and Maci, Scott and his children Ryan and Jory from Westmoreland, Kansas and Lynda and her husband David Shepherd and children Layne and Landon from Overland Park, Kansas; Nancy’s husband Duane Unruh of Dodge City, Kansas and Nancy’s children Marsha Laswell and son Shawn from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mel Hemphill and his wife Peggy of Newport News, Virginia, and their sons Kevin, Gary and Darlene Hemphill of Pratt, Kansas and their sons Kyle and Kirk; Norma’s children Debbie and her husband Mike Jones of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and their children Amy and Aaron, Cindy and husband Wills Weigand and their daughter Candace from Georgetown, Texas, and Dan Anderson and wife Brenda and their daughter Danielle of rural Laverne, Oklahoma.
Her only surviving sibling for a family of eight children is her sister Roberta and her husband Gerald Teter of Dover, Arkansas.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday April 3rd at the Christian Church in Englewood, Kansas. Interment will follow in Englewood Cemetery. Family visitation will take place immediately following funeral services and will be held at Englewood School. Memorial contributions can be made to the Englewood Alumni Association.
