View Memorial Slideshow David G. Hartwich, 61, of rural Wamego, KS, passed away late Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Manhattan. David was born August 7, 1954 in Onaga, KS, the son of Paul A. and Sylvia Bonjour Hartwich. He graduated from Onaga High School in the class of 1972, and also graduated from Emporia State in 1976 with a degree in Industrial Arts. On February 24, 1978, he married Susan L. Rezac in Emmett, KS. She survives of the home. Following college, Dave taught school in Sabetha, KS from 1976 thru 1979, and then at Wamego High School from 1979 until 2009. During his time as a teacher, he also coached wrestling, football, and track. He built a special bond with his students and co-workers. During his years of teaching and until his recent illness, Dave farmed and operated Hartwich Brothers Construction with his brother Stan and their sons. He had a love for farming and working with his cattle. He enjoyed collecting antiques, hunting, trapping, working on a construction project with his family, and going to the annual Wamego 4th of July celebration and driving one of his antique tractors in the parade. Dave was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, a past board member of Kansas Farm Bureau, past member of Wamego Teacher’s Association, Emporia State Alumni Association, and was a Life Member of F.F.A. His survivors include his wife Susan, of Wamego; four sons: Travis Hartwich (Trey), Will Hartwich (Casie), Cody Hartwich (Ashlyn) all of Wamego, and Nick Hartwich of Tucson, AZ; one brother, Stan Hartwich (Sharon), one sister, Cindy Falk (Milton), all of Onaga, KS; five grandchildren: Trayton, Sadie, Alayna, Ike, and Wren Hartwich; five step-grandchildren: Reid and Ryleigh Jones, Burk and Reese Springer, and Dillon Blain; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Hartwich; two brothers: Lynn and Jerry Hartwich; his mother, Sylvia Hartwich Galloway, and his step-father, Ray Galloway. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church of Wamego. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery located near his family farm and home. Mr. Hartwich will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20th at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, with family greeting friends from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Hartwich Family Education Fund c/o Wamego Community Foundation, or to the Wamego United Methodist Church, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547.
