View Memorial Slideshow Ruth E. Katz, 92, of Manhattan, KS and formerly of Wamego, KS, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016 at The Good Shepherd in Manhattan following an extended illness. Ruth was born June 25, 1923 in Wamego, KS, the daughter of Roy E. and Laura “Mabel (Lenhart) Lee. She graduated from Wamego High School in the class of 1943. Following her graduation, she enlisted into the U.S. Navy, serving as a pharmacist mate 3rd class until her honorable discharge in 1946. After returning from her service in the Navy, she became employed by Sears, Roebuck and Company in Alhambra, CA, for 39 years before retiring while in the position of supervisor of cashiers, in 1985. She married Donald A. Katz on May, 17, 1985 in La Puente, CA. and they moved to Manhattan in 1986. Donald preceded her in death in 1993. Her memberships included the American Legion Harold Johnson Post 172-Wamego, First Baptist Church of Wamego, and Manhattan First Baptist Church, and Waves National Women in Military Service for America, of which she was a charter member. Her survivors include: her son, Gary Mayfield and his wife Barbara of Fort Worth, TX; two step-sons: Ronnie Katz of Manhattan, KS, and David Katz of Topeka, KS; 2 grandsons and 5 great-grandsons. She was also preceded in death by 3 sisters: Martha, Lola, and Lila; and a brother, Ralph. Funeral services for Mrs. Katz will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow in Wamego City Cemetery. Ruth will lie in-state beginning at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with family greeting friends during visitation from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the KSU Foundation Center for basic Cancer Research, or to the American Heart and Lung Association, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547.
