Raymond Samuel Burry

Raymond S. Burry, 83, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Wamego Health Center. Raymond was born June 15, 1932 in Niagara Falls, New York, the son of Samuel P. and Ruth Amelia (Smith) Burry. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1950, and graduated from Purdue University in 1954 with a degree in business administration. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After returning from his military service, he started his career in Personnel Administration at State University College of Buffalo, NY, and then at University of Wyoming from 1977 until moving to Manhattan, KS in 1987, where he worked at Kansas State University until retirement. He moved to Wamego in 1988. Raymond was married to Judy Messick in 1968, and they divorced in 1977. He married Loretta Shrimplin on July 22, 1991 in Manhattan, KS. She survives of the home. He was a past member of Square Dance Clubs in Manhattan and the Little Apple Plus Square Dance Club. He was also a member of the Wamego Senior Center, and the Heritage Club. Raymond enjoyed reading, gardening, and keeping up with the news on TV, and going to coffee groups in Manhattan 3 days each week. He kept a routine of going to the fitness center or to the library each day. His survivors include his wife, Loretta, of Wamego; his three children: Steven Burry and wife Nancy, Kansas City, MO, Heidi Ladowski and husband Brandon, Sayville, New York, and Christine Burry, Denver, CO; three step-children: Cathy Morris and husband Sherman, Wamego, KS, Carla Pressler and husband Keith, Kansas City, KS, Christy Morris and husband Jerry of Eudora, KS; one sister, Jean Tracy, Port Charlotte, FL; one brother, Donald Burry, San Diego CA; eight step-grandchildren, eighteen step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Audrey. A celebration of Raymond’s life will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, March 5, at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, with a short time of remembrance just before 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggests memorials to the Wamego Public Library, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
