Earl Dean Buttenhoff, 75, Alma, Kansas passed away Sunday, August 7, 2016 at the Alma Manor in Alma, Kansas. On June 22, 1941, Earl was born to Walter and Esther (Schmanke) Buttenhoff on their family farm west of Alma. Earl attended District 4 Country School, St. John Lutheran School, and graduated from Alma High School in 1959. He was united in marriage with Cheryl Ruth Gehrt on July 9, 1983 in Topeka, KS. She survives of the home. When Earl was young, he excelled in sports. He lettered in Football, Basketball, and in Track & Field where his relay team placed in State. Earl even had a scholarship offer to play football for the University of Washburn. He was also very involved in the FFA Chapter where he worked in various beef projects and held a Chapter Degree and was the FFA President as a senior. After high school, Earl continued work with cattle on various ranches in Missouri. Earl worked as a forklift operator for FMC in Lawrence, KS for 20 years. In 1992, he started working with pure bred Simmental Cattle until 1997 when he and Cheryl started their own farm. Earl enjoyed working with “his children” in 4-H. He often worked as a project leader for beef projects in 4-H. Earl is also survived by a daughter: Sarah Lister (Laramy), Topeka, KS; three grandchildren: Katherine and Matthew Lister, and McKinley Miller; a son-in-law: Mark Miller, Wamego, KS; mother-in-law: Nyla Gehrt, Topeka, KS; one nephew: Brent Mooreman; and three nieces: Brenda and Bonnie Mooreman, and Beth Peters. He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Morgan Miller; and a sister: Marilyn Mooreman and husband, Hogler. Funeral Service for Earl will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Alma, KS. Burial will follow the service at 1:00 p.m. at the Wamego City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, August 15, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Alma. Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the St. John Lutheran School, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, P.O. Box #126, Alma, KS 66401
