Wamego- Evelyn Schmidt, 86, of Wamego died Wednesday August 5, 2009 at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center in Wamego.
Born on November 11, 1922 in Marysville, Kansas, she was the daughter of Henry and Mabel (Cooper) Marquardt. Evelyn graduated from Marysville High School in 1940. On October 13, 1942, she married Sylvester Schmidt. The couple lived in Marysville, Kansas City, Hays, Goodland and Manhattan before settling in Wamego. Evelyn was a daycare provider for many children in the area for over 30 years. She enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, watching K-State and KU basketball games, wheel of fortune and going to casinos.
Evelyn is survived by: her sons, Steve Schmidt of Parkville, MO, David Schmidt of Onaga, KS, Stan Schmidt of Wamego, KS, Mike Schmidt of Topeka, KS and John Schmidt of Wamego, KS; her daughters, Janet Richardson of Topeka, KS, Jane Fechter of Emporia, KS, Janelle Harris of Wamego, KS, Mary Labbe of Wamego, KS, Jeanne Newton of Hendersonville, TN, and Lori Montgomery of Lawrence, KS; her siblings, Kathleen Leikam of Salina, KS, Maxine Farrell of Beatrice, NE, Marilyn Anderson of Blue Springs, MO, Joan Rosette of Wheatridge, CO, Gary Marquardt of Kansas City, KS, Don Marquardt of Marysville, KS, and Roger Marquardt of Kansas City, KS; her sister-in-law, Dolores Schmidt of San Diego, CA; her 29 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 10, 1990, her son James Schmidt in 1949, her granddaughter Brenda Fechter in 1968, her grandsons, Timothy Harris in 1971, Joseph Richardson in 1996 and Justin Stratton in 2004 and her sister Helen Scott in 2008.
A mass of Christian burial will be Monday August 10th, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego. The Rosary will be said Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with visitation following until 8:30 p.m. She will lie in state at the funeral home Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to The Evelyn Schmidt Memorial Fund that will be designated by the family at a later date.
