Mabel (Thowe) Grieshaber

Wamego- Mabel (Thowe)Grieshaber, 94, formerly of Belvue, died September 16th at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center in Wamego. Mabel was born April 14, 1915 near Alma, Kansas the daughter of Peter and Anna (Ringel) Thowe. She grew up in the Hinerville community north of Alma. She graduated from Alma High School and later attended Emporia State Teacher’s College and obtained her teaching certificate. Mabel taught school in Wabaunsee County until her marriage. She received special recognition for having been neither absent nor tardy for more than 20 years spent in the classroom. On June 20, 1940, she married Otto Grieshaber at Peace Evangelical & Reformed Church in Alma and the couple lived on their farm south of Belvue in Kaw Township. Otto preceded her in death on January 27, 1996. Mabel was a member of the Wells Creek United Church of Christ (Immanual Faith Community Church) and a member of the Dorcas Circle. She assumed leadership roles in Sunday School, Youth Fellowship and 4-H while her children were young. She was a loving mother and farm wife, educator, gardener, quilter and beekeeper. She was a member of the Kansas Beekeepers Association for many years and at one time had 40 colonies of bees. Survivors include: her daughter, Alice Rodowick and husband Rod of Caliente, NV; her son Roy Grieshaber and partner Robert Fasic of Eureka, CA; her two sisters-in-law, Stella Thowe of Alma, KS and Ronnie Grieshaber of St. Mary’s, KS; her two brothers-in-law, Henry Grieshaber of Wamego, KS and Carl Grieshaber of St. Mary’s, KS; and her numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2009 at Immanual Faith Community Church of Wells Creek, with burial following in Greenwood Cemetery (south of Belvue). The family will greet friends at a visitation from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. She will lie in-state at the funeral home beginning Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Immanual Faith Community Church or to the organization of the donor’s choice and may be left in care of the funeral home, P.O.
