Milton J. Stuewe, Sr., 87, of Alma, KS died Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at a Topeka hospital. He was born October 15, 1921 on the family farm south of Alma, the son of Gustav and Dorthea Thowe Stuewe. He attended his early schooling at District 45 Alma, KS, and St. John Lutheran School, and later graduated from Alma High School in 1940.
He was a farmer and stockman, operating the family farm south of Alma for over 50 years. Even after retirement in Alma, his daily trips to the farm were one of his loves and passions. As an avid outdoorsman and hunter, he loved nature, and shared many memorable hours with his family. Whether it was hunting, fishing, or just being there as one of the group, each day would come to a close with his special departure greeting – “See Ya!”.
Milton was a faithful and lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent , Trustee, and on the Stewardship Board. He was also active in the community, serving on the Farmer Township board for 37 years, the Wabaunsee County Watershed board, the ASC board, and the Wabaunsee County Cattlemen’s board.
On January 21, 1945 he married Loma Mathies at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. She survives at their home. He is also survived by five sons, Milton Stuewe, Jr. and his wife Laura, of Alma, Ray Stuewe and his wife Sheila, of Wichita, KS, Gerald Stuewe and his wife Darcy, of Alma, Ervan Stuewe and his wife Pamela, of Alma, and Mark Stuewe and his wife Sharon, of Maple Hill, KS; one sister in-law, Charmaine Stuewe, of Alma; thirteen grandchildren, Shaun Stuewe, Sarajane Waris, Darcy Feyh, Melissa Smith, David Stuewe, Ryan Stuewe, Heather Stuewe Orton, Brandon Stuewe, Brooke Stuewe, Moran Stuewe, Kristie Stuewe, Justin Stuewe, Travis Stuewe; nineteen great-grandchildren: Lacie, Ashley, and Chelsea Stuewe, Seth, Ethan, Eve, and Sage Waris, Colton, Austin, Fletcher, Cameron, Karlee and Raegan Feyh, Meghan Goforth, Jacob and Luke Smith, Hunter and Hanna Stuewe, and Talen Orton; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Sherman, Edwin, and LeRoy Stuewe, and one sister, Lourine Miller.
Funeral services for Mr. Stuewe will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church of Alma, burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Stuewe will lie in-state at St. John Lutheran Church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Friday, where the family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. John Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Hour, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Alma, P.O.
