Lewis E. Schumacher

Lewis Elbert Schumacher, 88, a former long time resident of Wamego, KS passed away September 26, 2009, in Tampa, Florida. He was born in Wamego on June 27, 1921, the son of May Yoos and Lee Schumacher. Lewis grew up on farms in the Louisville area and attended schools there, graduating from Wamego High School in 1939. He enlisted in the Navy in August, 1942, and served until 1946. During this time he was stationed at Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; San Francisco, California, and attended Washburn University under a Navy program. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands until the end of his enlistment. Lewis farmed with his father until 1950 when he reenlisted in the Navy and served until January of 1954. On March 17, 1952, he married Patricia Ross in Leonardtown, Maryland. Following his discharge they moved back to Wamego and he worked in the Wamego Post Office until his retirement. His hobbies were hunting and fishing and he spent many enjoyable hours pursuing these past times. Lewis was a member of the American Legion for fifty-two years. Survivors include his wife, Pat, of Tampa, Florida; his son, Steve and his wife, Carmen, of Tampa, Florida; grandsons Armando (Sarah) of Tampa, Florida; Lucas of San Francisco, California, and Andres of Tampa, Florida and three great-grandsons, Julian, Adrian, and Nathan of Tampa. His brother, Cork Schumacher, Wamego, Kansas, sister, Leone McKinney, Topeka, Kansas, and adopted family members, Teresa, Ghayth and Valerio Coussa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Tom. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, burial will follow in Wamego City Cemetery. The family will greet friends during a visitation at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Lew Schumacher Memorial, designated for the Wamego City Park pond, so that children might experience the joy of catching a fish.
