Nella Lee Anneberg

Nella Lee Anneberg, of Manhattan, passed away at her home, Thursday, March 4, 2010. Nella was born October 25, 1917. Nella was the 6th daughter of Kate and Berton D. Corwin in Kipp, Kansas. The family moved from the farm to Abilene in 1922 for better educational opportunities. Nella worked in the Abilene library and was a nanny caring for four children in a prominent doctor’s home. In 1936 the family moved to Lawrence. They bought a home and ran it as a boarding house in hopes the seven children could attend KU affordably. Nella nannied again in the summers at the Lake of the Forest in Edwardsville, Kansas from 1936-1940 while attending KU during the school year. Nella met Frank John Anneberg in summer school at Kansas University. They enjoyed taking many hikes and picnics around Lawrence and were married in Leavenworth at the Anneberg homestead December 27, 1940. Nella earned her bachelor degree in English from KU in 1940. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. In 1960 she earned her masters in Speech and Hearing from K-State. She was a traveling speech and hearing teacher for USD 383. She also provided speech therapy to preschoolers in Head Start, children with autism, and stroke victims. Nella was a member of the First Christian Church in Manhattan, Kansas for 62 years. She served as a Sunday school teacher, helped with live nativity pageants and was an active member in Christian Women Fellowship. Nella was active in the Mental Health Organization, Flint Hills Parkinson Support Group, American Association of University Women and United Commercial Travelers. Nella and Frank were also charter members of the Manhattan Camping Association. Nella’s passions included bridge, travel, creative cookery, water aerobics, bird watching and Girl Scouts. Nella was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, January 1, 1997 and a infant son Noel. She is survived by her children, Vicki Cole, Mission; John Anneberg, Manhattan; and Kathy Huntzinger, Wamego; and Linda Anneberg, Olathe. Eight grandchildren, Galen Herbic, Mark Herbic, Joy Campbell, Jim Anneberg, Kurt Huntzinger, Kimberly Honeycutt, Jacob Brown, Jesse Brown; and 14 great- grandchildren. She has donated her body to KU Medical School in Kansas City. A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Christian Church of Manhattan, 115 Courthouse Plaza, at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, March 20th. Family and friends are invited to stay afterwards to share memories and enjoy light refreshments in fellowship hall.
