Ruby L. Schmitz, 55, a longtime resident of the Alma and McFarland, Kansas area, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010 at Stormont-Vail Health Care in Topeka.
Ruby was born May 24, 1954 in Topeka, KS the daughter of Leroy H. and Gertie L. (Heston) Hatch. She graduated from Perry-Lecompton High School in 1972. She had lived in the Alma and McFarland area for over 30 years. Ruby married John Edwin “J.E.” Schmitz, on Feb. 16, 1985 in Alma, KS. He survives of the home.
Ruby worked for several years as a C.N.A. at the Alma Manor, but was mostly a homemaker, mother and wife for her family. She loved to go fishing, enjoyed the outdoors, cooking, canning food, listening to her father play the harmonica, banjo, and guitar, decorating her home for all of the holidays, but mostly providing and doing things for her children.
She is also survived by her mother, Gertie Hatch of Lawrence, KS; her children, Ashley, Lola, Joshua, Chelsea, and Chad Schmitz (Amy), all of Alma, KS; Kelly Oliver (Jason), Maple Hill, KS; Christina Scheer, and Annetta Parker, both of Lyndon, KS; Carl Scheer, of Osage City, KS; 9 grandchildren, Kendra, Kayla, Emily, Canyon, Abby, Cade, Eli, Brittnay, Renee; and her brothers and sisters, Elaine, Ernest, Dean, Glenn, Robert, Deloris, and Patricia. She was preceded in death by a son, “J.P.” Schmitz in 2003, and her father.
Mrs. Schmitz was cremated. There will be a visitation with family greeting friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30th at the Stewart Funeral Home of Alma. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 31st at the Alma Peace United Church of Christ.
