Michael "Mike" J. Coon, 69, of Wamego, died Friday morning, June 4, 2010 at Wamego City Hospital.
Mike was born March 7, 1941 in Wamego, Kansas, the son of Allen and Ora (Troth) Coon. Mike attended school in Wamego and graduated from Wamego High School. He was a lifelong residence of the community. Mike married Carol Jo Pageler, September 26, 1964 at the United Church of Christ, Wells Creek . They were blessed with two children, Krista and Christopher.
Mike was employed by Central Mechanical Construction Company in Manhattan for 42 years. He retired in 2007. Mike was a member of the Immanuel Faith Community Church Wells Creek, Wamego Masonic Lodge #75, 32* Scottish Rite of Free masonary, Arab Shrine of Topeka, 1901 Olds Unit, Scout Master for Troop #92 of Wamego, and American Legion Post #620. He served in the United States Marine Corp Reserve from April 13, 1967 to February 21, 1973.
The "last alarm" will ring for Fire 6 on June 9, 2010. Mike joined the Wamego Fire Department in June of 1963 and retired in March of 2003 for 40 years of service, 12 of those years he served as Fire Chief.
Mike enjoyed the great outdoors. He was a master hunter and fisherman. His true joy was sitting by a lake or pond waiting for the "big one" or walking in a pasture looking for a deer, quail, pheasant or turkey with his son, Chris and grandsons, Zach and Mason.
Mike is survived by his wife Carol of the home, Wamego, daughter Krista Farrell, Salina, Christopher Coon and his wife Chelsea, Westmoreland, two grandsons, Zachary and Mason Farrell, Salina, and brother Robert "Bob" Coon, McFarland. Preceding him in death were two sisters Bonnie Carlson, Shirley Seele, and his brother Jerry Coon.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego. Burial will follow in the Wamego Cemetery. Mike will lie in-state beginning at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010.
