Dennis R. Mayer, 62, of Westmoreland, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the Westy Care Home following complications from Parkinson’s Disease.
Dennis was born January 4, 1948 in Westmoreland, Kansas, the son of George C. and Dorothy J. (Lelievre) Mayer. He attended schools in Westmoreland, graduating from Westmoreland High School in 1966. He attended Kansas State University for a short time before joining the Air Force. After 4 years he received an Honorable Discharge, and was a Vietnam Era Veteran. He then returned to KSU, and after graduation, moved to Monticello, Utah where he worked for 2 years for the Bureau of Land Management. Dennis then became a full-time trapper, and later a part time firefighter, before becoming a full time Upland Firefighter for San Juan County, Utah. He retired due to health issues, and in 2003 moved back to Westmoreland.
Dennis was a past President of the Utah National Trappers Association, an Eagle Scout, and a member of the Westmoreland United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, trapping and hunting, and enjoyed teaching trapping as well.
Survivors include his sister, Debra K. Snyder and her husband Martin, of Manhattan, KS; a niece, Shannon Hughston and her husband Jerry, of Manhattan, KS; a nephew, Jason Snyder and his wife Lacey, of Greeley, CO; great niece and nephew, Taylor and Tyler Hughston, of Manhattan, KS, and great niece Ellery Snyder, of Greeley, CO, in addition to many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
