Elizabeth Ann Heder

Elizabeth Ann Heder, 85, of Alma, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Alma Manor Care Home. She was born May 13, 1925 in Coffeyville, Kansas, the daughter of Ralph D. and Hester Ellen (Schwab) Grimes. She graduated from Coffeyville High School and attended Coffeyville Junior College, prior to graduating from Kansas State University in 1947 with a BS in Vocational Home Economics and Secondary Education. Following college, she taught Home Ec. In Whiting, KS for a few years and then taught at Alma High School for several years. She also worked as the secretary at the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Department in Alma for many years. On May 23, 1948, Elizabeth married Lyle H. Heder. He preceded her in death in 1973. Elizabeth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Manhattan, KS, a member of Phi Tau Junior College Honor Society, Omicron Nu Home Economics Honor Society, Kappa Delta Sorority, and was a past member of South Branch Sewing Club, Pleasant Valley E.H.U., Ladies Reading Circle, and the Topeka Chapter of the D.A.R. She enjoyed leather-crafting, crocheting, and knitting, but mostly enjoyed reading. Survivors include relatives and her caregivers who looked after her for many years, Jim and Janice Heder, of Alma, Kansas; one nephew and his wife, Hal and Judy Lietz, of California;a sister in-law, Edna Lietz, of California, and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 3, 2010 at 10:30 a.m., at the Stewart Funeral Home of Alma. Burial will follow in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Alma. She will lie in-state at the funeral home Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. There is no formal visitation planned. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Manhattan, or to the Wabaunsee and Pottawatomie County Regional Library, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Alma, P.O. Box 126, 66401.
