Marten, 65, a lifelong resident of Wamego and Louisville, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center of Wamego. “Red” was born in Wamego, KS on June 17, 1945 the son of William Henry and Gladys P. (Bowman) Marten. He attended the Louisville grade school and graduated from Wamego High School in 1963. Following high school, he worked at the local KDOT until enlisting into the U.S. Army in August of 1965. He attained the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge in August of 1967. He then returned to work for KDOT before starting his 31 years of employment at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Topeka. Most of his work there was in the distribution center prior to his retirement in 2001. He was a life member of the Black Jack American Legion of St. George and the Manhattan V.F.W., and was a past-member of the United Steel Workers, and the United Rubber Workers Unions. Survivors include his brother, Lynn D. Marten and his wife Janice, of Neodesha, KS; one niece, Brandie Hoagland, Joplin, MO; two nephews, Rick Marten, Neodesha, KS and Chad Marten, Pittsburg, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Alice Kay Marten. Graveside funeral services with full military burial honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Wamego City Cemetery. Mr. Marten will lie in-state at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Thursday until time of the services at the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Valley Vista Therapeutic Garden Fund and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
