Lyle W. Carr

Lyle Wilber Carr, 94, of Wamego, KS, passed away Friday, October 15, 2010 at Westy Community Care Home, Westmoreland.  He was born November 22, 1915, in Fostoria, Kansas, the son of Joe C. and Jane “Gertrude” (Mosier) Carr.  Lyle attended Sales Community Grade School, S.W. of Westmoreland. Lyle began working on farms near Flush, Kansas and with the Frye family near Manhattan, KS, up until enlisting in the United States Army in 1942. he married LaVernie “Vernie” Margaret (Garland) Carr on September 30, 1944, in Hagerstown, Maryland, she preceded him in death in 2004. Following his military service he began working again for the Frye family farm until 1953 when he purchased his own farm and moved onto it. Lyle was a farmer and stockman all his life.   Lyle was awarded the Purple Heart for his military services during WWII. He served in the 66th Infantry and also the Black Panther Division while he was in the St. Nazairs and Lorient regions of France, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. Lyle was also a member of VFW of Wamego for many years.   Lyle was preceded in death by his wife “Vernie”, 3 brothers Lester, Everett and Lewis Carr and a sister Gladys Murk. Lyle is survived by his 3 sons: Kent Carr and wife Connie of Wamego, KS, Keith Carr and wife Joanne, of Manhattan, KS and Bernard Carr and wife Bonnie, of Albuquerque, NM; 2 granddaughters: Lisa Hoppe and husband Kevin and Kim Hyman and husband David; 4 great-grandchildren: Shelby Barnhardt, Kayla & Lauren Hoppe and Jacob Hyman; 4 step-grandchildren: Tim & Mike Hettinger, Scott Kohl and Ladonna Ballah; and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego, with burial following at Wamego City Cemetery. Mr. Carr will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m., Monday, at the Stewart Funeral Home, where family will greet friends during a visitation from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW of Wamego, or Westy Community Care Home, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, Wamego, Kansas, 66547.
