John C. Lenherr, 85, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Stormont-Vail Health Care of Topeka.
John was born December 7, 1924 in Flush, KS, the son of Joseph A. and Genevieve Ann (Weltsch) Lenherr, one of eight children in his family. He attended Flush schools and graduated from Flush High School in the class of 1942. He married Mary Ann Weisman on October 8, 1956 at Seven Dolars Catholic Church in Manhattan, KS. She preceded him in death in September of 2004.
John worked on the family farm until he was in his late 30’s. He then began working at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Topeka in the late 1950’s, where he worked for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1986. He was a very active member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego, serving on the Parish Council and helping provide communion and delivering meals to the homebound and others who could not attend church. He was also a past member of the Knights of Columbus, and the United Rubber Workers Union. He enjoyed gardening, taking walks, and was a skilled woodworker, helping with several projects for the church.
Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Peterson and her husband Lyle, of rural St. George, KS; two sons, Tom Lenherr and wife Judy, of Windom, KS, Michael Lenherr, Austin, TX; one brother, David Lenherr of rural St. George, KS, four sisters, Margaret Hysell, Wamego, KS, Virginia Cochran, Burrton, KS, Vivian Daywalt, Chandler, IN, Kathleen Noll of Manhattan, KS; four grandchildren, John, Matthew, and Emily Lenherr, Lacey Arevalo; and two great-grandchildren, Taj and Esperanza. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen, and two brothers, Giles and Bernard.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Lenherr will lie in-state at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego beginning at 1:00 p.m. Friday, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547. www.stewartfuneralhomes.com
