Elizabeth “Liz” L. Kern, 62, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away late Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Mercy Regional Health Center of Manhattan.
Liz was born October 11, 1948 in Higginsville, Missouri, the daughter of Ernest W. and Margaret A. (Marcks) Tempel. She attended Higginsville schools, graduating from Higginsville High School in 1966. She also attended Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, Missouri. On November 19, 1977 she married William “Bill” E. Kern in Overland Park, Kansas. He survives of the home.
Liz and her family moved to Wamego in 1985. She operated a childcare at her home for a few years prior to starting her job at the City of Wamego as an office assistant in 1989. She graduated from The Municipal Clerks Certification Institute at Wichita State University in 2008, and had currently been working as a clerk for the City of Wamego. Liz was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church of Wamego, serving as a Sunday School teacher for 15 years, was a member of the United Methodist Women, volunteered at the church Thrift Shop, and volunteered as a mentor for Wamego High School students. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, loved flowers, and being on a sandy beach. Her family was her main love. She especially cherished time spent at the dinner table with her children and couldn’t get enough of her grandbabies.
She is also survived by her three children and their spouses, Steven Kern and Lin, of Baumont, CA, Bethany Smith and Travis, of Manhattan, KS, Kathryn Van Rhee and Bas, of Baumont, CA; three sisters, Ruth Hartwig, Excelsior Springs, MO, Marilyn Selinger (Bill) of St. Charles, MO, Gloria Fetter (Gary) of Marshall, MO; one brother, Ernest W. Tempel (Pam) of Columbia, MO; one sister in-law, Donna Tibbets (Emmet) of Topeka, KS; two brothers in-law, Greg Kern (Lori) of Lancaster, PA, Doug Kern (Carolyn) of Denton, TX; three grandchildren, Matyce, Annaka, Jillian; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kern will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21 at the First United Methodist Church of Wamego. Burial will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery. Liz will lie in-state at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego beginning at 1:00 p.m. Monday, where the family will greet friends during a visitation from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
