Andrew Sackrider, 82, Wamego, KS passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at the Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland, KS.
On February 22, 1937, Andy was born to Charles and Sophia (Ziegler) Sackrider in Wamego, KS. Andy attended St. Bernard Grade School and Wamego High School. He was united in marriage with Phyllis Kuhn on September 1, 1956. They divorced in 1982. He was united in marriage with Barbara (Schane) Cook on March 18, 1983. Barb survives of the home.
Andy started helping his brother, Gerald, at his greenhouse when he was 8 years of age. In 1955, he started working for KDOT where he was employed for 43 years before retiring in 1998 as an Area Superintendent. When he retired, Andy continued working around the home and doing odd jobs for others.
Andy was a man that could not say ‘no’ to anyone in need. He enjoyed helping others in any way he could. Above all, Andy loved his family. He was a great husband and father, and looked forward to visiting grandchildren and attending their events. He also had a soft spot for animals and enjoyed the outdoors. Andy was an accomplished woodworker. He built several items for grandchildren, and helped build 5 homes for himself and his sons.
Andy is survived by six children, Steve Sackrider (Nancy), Rod Sackrider (Dawn), Mike Cook (Joni), Shana Rickstrew (Ron), Shari Mays (Ron), and Tami Cook; two sisters, Josephine Bisenicks and Joyce Knapp; thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Gerald, Charles, Leonard, Harold and Clyde; two sisters, Genevieve Mayfield and Reva Witt; and a granddaughter, Lindsey Rickstrew.
Funeral service for Andy will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow in the St. Bernard Cemetery in Wamego. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 15th at the funeral home. The family has suggested memorials to the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter or the Friends of the Park fund, and may be left in the care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
