Arlon C. Bryson, 88, Wamego, Kansas, died September 18, 2018 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. He was the son of Lloyd and Florence (Neill) Bryson, born September 17, 1930, at Topeka, Kansas, grew up on a farm near Osage City, Kansas, where he attended schools, graduating in 1948.
He enrolled at the Kansas State Teachers College immediately after graduation and began teaching in a rural school that fall at Phelon School, grades 1-8. He also taught at the Vassar School and later at Lyndon Public Schools. After serving two years in the Army during the Korean War, he returned to become a teacher-elementary principal and later superintendent of schools at Melvern. He obtained his BS Degree and MS Degree from Kansas State Teachers College. He served as Superintendent of Schools at USD 322-Onaga and later became the administrator at Alma-USD 329. He taught many years for the Highland Community College in the areas of Holton, Onaga, Westmoreland, Wamego and Alma. He retired with 42 years in the field of education.
He was community minded and served his church in each of them. He was a volunteer as well as being a member of the Melvern, Onaga and Wamego Lions Club. He received a 35 year award from the American Red Cross for his volunteer instruction of First Aid classes. Numerous times he served offices of the organizations he belonged. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kansas United Administrators Assoc., Onaga Lodge No. 188, and Wamego First United Methodist Church.
He married Carol (Simmons) Bryson on June 27, 1954. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2011. Two sons survive: Kyle and (Donna) Bryson, Tucson, Arizona, Chris and (Cindy) Bryson of Wamego; a brother, Eldon Bryson of Scranton, Kansas; five grandchildren: Brandon Frazee, Jonelle Vold, Courtney Bryson, Tyler Bryson, and Tara Shaw, and nine great-grandchildren. Also preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Lloyd Jr., Donald, and Gene.
Visitation will be held at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego on Sunday, September 23, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Wamego on Monday, September 24, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Wamego City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Wamego Public Library or the First United Methodist Church, and left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
