Betty Jean Fechter, 89, formerly of Wamego and Manhattan, KS, passed away at Stormont-Vail Healthcare of Topeka, Sunday, October 28, 2018.
Betty was born November 5, 1928 at Wamego, the daughter of Ernest and Eva Marie (Johnson) Smith. She attended St. George grade school and graduated from Manhattan High School. Betty married Victor L. Fechter at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Wamego in 1949. Vic preceded her in death in April of 2015.
Betty worked as a stay at home mom for many years and got her boys involved in dance, camping, fishing and boating. She kept books for her husband’s and father’s businesses. When the boys were in junior high she went to work for the Union National Bank where she was employed for many years.
Betty loved to dance and to travel. She was a member of the Manhattan Country Club, where she enjoyed ladies golf day and couples club. She was a big fan of Kansas State. She was a great cook and loved to entertain for frequent cocktail parties at her home. Betty will be deeply missed by her family.
Survivors include her two sons, Michael Fechter (Vanessa) of Topeka, Mickey Fechter of Wamego; a brother, Robert Smith; two grandchildren, Adam and Rachel Fechter, and three great-grandchildren, Addison Adler and Samuel. Betty was also preceded in death by an infant sister Ellen, a brother Delbert, and Kate, her granddaughter.
Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at St. Bernard’s Cemetery of Wamego. The family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego prior to the graveside service. Memorials are suggested to the T. Russell Reitz Regional Animal Shelter and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
