Charles Edward Herren, 90, of Alma, Kansas, died Monday, August 2, 2021, at the Alma Manor. He was a long-time resident of the area. Charlie was born December 5, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Wesley McKinley and Ethel (Schwendener) Herren. Charlie graduated from Kansas State University with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He owned his own veterinary practice in Lexington, Nebraska and then in Casey, Illinois. He also practiced and taught at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. He always said his “claim to fame” was while at Murray State, he was asked to consult on the medical treatment for the famous racehorse, Secretariat. He retired from Murray State and moved back to Kansas. Charlie married Vivian Watson in 1957 in Casey, Illinois. She preceded him in death on November 27, 1996. Charlie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland and a tireless volunteer for L.C.M.S. Laborer for Christ program. He enjoyed boating and fishing, but his passion was woodworking. Charlie made beautiful tables, dressers, beds, and picture frames, just to mention a few and walnut was his wood of choice. Charlie was also very charitable and especially enjoyed supporting the Topeka Rescue Mission. Charlie is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Frank of Alma, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was also preceded in death by his father and mother, and his step-mother, Sarah Elizabeth (Bollinger) Herren, his daughter, Lisa Herren and his brothers, David Herren, James Herren, Wesley Herren, Jr., and Richard Herren. A graveside funeral service for both Charles and Lisa Herren will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in McFarland. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. John's Lutheran School in Alma, KS, and those may be sent in care of Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home.
