David Arthur Wertzberger

David Arthur Wertzberger, 78, of Alma, Kansas, died Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.  He was a life-long resident of the community.

David was born August 20, 1944, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of August and Helen (Haller) Wertzberger.  He attended local grade school and graduated from Alma High School in 1962.

David was a farmer and stockman most of his adult life and ran the family farm north of Alma.  He also worked as a Banbury Operator at Good Year Tire Company for thirty-seven years.

He married Sandra Joyce Maike on July 20, 1968.  After almost fifty-five years together, she survives at their home.

David was a board member for the Alma Coop, a member and church councilman for Holy Family Catholic Church, and a member of the Flint Hills Pork Producers.  He enjoyed driving around in his MULE utv and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.  He loved to travel and was especially fond of the many bus trip tours he and Sandra went on.  He loved to play Pitch and watch classic television, especially Gun Smoke reruns.  He was a great Royals baseball fan.

David is also survived by his sons; Scott Wertzberger (Chris), John Wertzberger (Shannon), and Daniel Wertzberger (Jessi), all of Alma; his grandchildren, Mitchell Wertzberger, Brandon Wertzberger, Madisyn Wertzberger, Luke Wertzberger, and Eli Wertzberger; his siblings, Barbara Sommer, Council Grove, Mary Gehrt, Alma, and Robert Wertzberger, Alma.  David was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jason Wertzberger, and his bother-in-law, Charles Sommer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, June 23, 2023, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma.  Father Swamy Nannam will be the Celebrant.  Burial will follow in St. John Lutheran Cemetery.  The family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the church on Thursday. A rosary prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm. They suggest memorial contributions to The Jason Wertzberger Scholarship Fund, Midland Hospice, or St. John Lutheran School, and those may be sent in care of Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be made at www.campanellastewart.com.
