Delbert Theodore Umscheid

  Delbert Theodore Umscheid, 91, Wamego, KS passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society in Wamego.   On December 20, 1926, Delbert was born on the family farm southeast of Flush, KS to Phillip Peter and Elizabeth (Gasser) Umscheid.  He attended the Catholic school in Flush and graduated from Flush High School in 1945.  Delbert worked on the family farm from 1945-1950 before joining the United States Air Force and being honorably discharged in 1954.  He worked for Pepsi Cola for six years as a Sales Representative, then for Daylor Motor Co. in Wamego from 1963-1972.  He was a General Manager for Schubert Chevrolet & Olds in Wamego until he retired in 1987.  He also worked for other car dealers in the area after his retirement. During his career, he won several awards and trips for being a top salesman.    Delbert enjoyed the idea of flying and took pilot lessons in 1951 and again from 1968-1969. After Delbert retired, he continued working on the family farm and hauling grain well into his 80s.  He also mowed the church grounds and the cemetery in Flush for many years.  He was a big supporter of Rock Creek High School, especially the athletic department.  He often ran errands for them when needed and attended many ballgames, ringing his cow bell proudly!  For 30 years he enjoyed his coffee shop stops in Wamego and later at the Manhattan Sale Barn Café.  Delbert always had a routine that you could ‘set your clock by’.   He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Flush where he served one term on the parish council and was an usher for years.  He also was a 3rd Degree life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #902, life member of American Legion Post #172, and a past member of Elks Club and Eagles Club, both in Manhattan, KS.   Delbert is survived by a sister, Doretha “Dort” Wells, Salina, KS (formerly of Manhattan); a sister-in-law, Dorothy Umscheid, Wamego, KS; twenty-one nieces and nephews; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Anton “Tony,” Eugene and Ignatius “Nates” Umscheid; four sisters, Loretta Straub, Alvira Umscheid, Estelle Farrell and Lucile Ubel; and three nephews, Wilfred, Kenny and Robert Straub.   Mass of Christian Burial for Delbert will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Flush, KS.  Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Delbert will lie in-state Thursday, January 18 at 1:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. and visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.  Memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Rock Creek Booster Club, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547
