Donald “Don” D. Eichem, 83, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019 at his home.
He was born August 14, 1936 to Lawrence and Anna (Prockish) Eichem. He attended Louisville and Rock Creek Grade Schools and graduated from Wamego High School in 1954. Don married Julie Applegate on August 9, 1956 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego. She preceded him in death in March of 2007. Don Worked for Skelgas, Funnel Lumber Company, Howell Lumber Company, Wamego Lumber and retired from Balderson Inc. in April 2000. He also worked during retirement for Murdock, Briggs, and Brown’s car dealerships from 2001 – 2007.
Don was very active in Cub Scouts and was the Cub Scout Master from 1966 – 1974. He played men’s fastpitch softball until his early 40’s and continued to have a love for softball and baseball. He also bowled in the Wamego leagues and then the Manhattan leagues until he retired from bowling. He was a member of the American Bowling Congress and attended 30 consecutive years of the National Bowling Tournaments.
He is survived by two sons, Tony (LeaAnn) Eichem, Dan (Donnis) Eichem, all of Wamego; a daughter, Joni (Mike) Cook of Abilene, KS; granddaughter, Jayme (Cory) Altman of Salina, KS; grandsons: Jason Eichem, Chris (Alicia) Cook; great-grandkids: Reese Altman, Jaycee Cook, Hudson Cook, and baby girl Cook due in November; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Leland Eichem.
The family will greet friends during a time of visitation and remembrance for Don on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. A private family inurnment will be in Laclede Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the City of Wamego Recreation Department, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, P.O. Box 48, 66547.
