Donald W. Kaufman, lovingly known as Don, 81, passed away on September 23, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.
Don was born on June 7, 1943, in Abilene, Texas, to parents Leo and Marcella (Hobbie) Kaufman.
Don embarked on a lifelong journey filled with discovery, education, and heartfelt moments with his family. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Zoology at Fort Hays State University, PhD in Zoology from the University of Georgia, and post doctorate in Genetics from the University of Texas. For 40 remarkable years, he was a dedicated professor and researcher specializing in small mammals at the Division of Biology at Kansas State University, where he shared his wealth of knowledge with countless students eager to learn.
Don’s greatest pride and joy came from his family. He married Glennis Ann Schroeder on August 5, 1967, and they had one daughter. Don's love for his daughter, Dawn Michelle "Micki" Kaufman, was boundless, and her parents’ shared enthusiasm for all things scientific created an extraordinary bond in the family. Together, they crafted a warm and welcoming atmosphere filled with laughter and lively discussions about the wonders of the natural world.
Don is survived by Glennis, Dawn, and countless family members and friends.
A private Celebration of Life service is scheduled at a future date. Arrangements are in the care of Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Society of Mammalogists for the “Donald W. and Glennis A. Kaufman Research Award” or The Lucas Historical Society.
