BONNER SPRINGS – Edna Louise Palenske, age 101, of Alma, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the Bonner Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Edna was born April 17, 1920, in Alma, Kansas. She was the daughter of Henry Laging and Ida (Soelter) Laging.

On March 27, 1941, Edna married Roy Edgar Palenske in Alma, Kansas. Roy and Edna spent their 71 years of marriage on their farm in the beautiful Flint Hills, near Alma, before Roy passed away on April 3, 2012. Edna and Roy had two children, Gary Lee and Ray Gene. They grew a variety of crops and livestock on the farm, raised large flocks of turkey and laying hens, and also bred pedigreed Cairn Terriers. Edna was a very independent and resourceful lady and continued to live on the family farm after Roy’s death until she was 96 years old. Edna was a prolific master quilter and was well known for her exquisite hand-made quilts and sense of humor. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, fishing, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edna was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Alma, Kansas.

Among Edna’s survivors are her son, Ray Palenske, of Basehor, Kansas; three grandchildren: Debra Burton (Shawn) of Basehor, Kansas, Brian Palenske of Basehor, Kansas and Charla Rasmussen (Robert) of Grand Island, Nebraska; and five great-grandchildren: Lauren, Celia, MacKenzie, Allison, and Christopher. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Edgar Laging; two sisters, Ella (Laging) Lundberg and Olga (Laging) Mogge; and her son, Gary.

A memorial service for Edna will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021, at the Peace United Church of Christ, Alma. Inurnment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Alma. Memorials are suggested to the Vitas Hospice organization or to the Peace United Church of Christ and may be left in care of the Campanella-Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, Kansas, at 4370 Salzer Road, Wamego, Kansas 66547.
