Glenn Arthur Herbic

On Sunday, January 2, Glenn Arthur Herbic, loving husband and father of four children, passed away at the age of 94 at the Alma Manor He was a long-time resident of the community. Glenn was born in Alma, the son of Oscar and Lena (Rebiskie) Herbic. He attended local schools and graduated in 1945 from Alma High School. He was drafted into the United State Marines and was honorably discharged. Glenn started working in grade school by helping a local Alma dairy by riding on the fender of a Model A Ford and jumping off and delivering the milk to the various houses. While in high school, he worked Saturdays burying cable for the phone company and in the summers, he got his start on the Rock Island railroad, working with his father (also a lifetime railroader) burying and splicing cable. Glenn worked on a signal gang while living in a railroad bunk car in many places, including Joliet, Illinois, Denton, Texas, and Liberal and Caldwell, Kansas. He worked his way to a full career as a Signal Maintainer. Glenn was based out of Belleville, Kansas. This job also took him to Colby, Kansas, Hallam, Nebraska and then back to Belleville, Kansas. He continued working for the Rock Island Railroad until it's closure in 1980. He then returned to Alma and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 1991 after over 44 years. Glenn loved fishing and hunting, especially with his children and grandchildren. He loved to play pitch and would visit the nursing home weekly to play cards with the residents there. He also enjoyed feeding the birds, raising roses and traveling. Glenn was a prize-winning bowler and coached his sons’ little league baseball team. Glenn excelled in basketball and was a starter for his high school team. He also loved to watch his Jayhawks play. Glenn was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and proud of his forty-five-year membership in AA. Glenn married Beulah Reuter on July 3, 1946, in Alma. After seventy-five years of marriage, she survives at their home. Glenn is also survived by his children; Stanley Herbic (Susan), Overland Park, Jim Herbic (Lynn), Salina, Patty Lovgren (Burt), Manhattan, and Bob Herbic (Peggy), Olathe; his twelve grandchildren, Mark Herbic, Charley Herbic, Christina Nance, Jessica Simshauser, Jeremy Herbic, Joshua Mall, Mariah Calovich, Kaylie Lovgren, Jack Herbic, Molly Herbic, Andrew Herbic, and Michael Herbic. Glenn was also blessed with eleven great-grandchildren, Nola Herbic, Heidi Nance, Owen Nance, Wyatt Simshauser, Connor Bagwell, Emerson Herbic, Willow Herbic, Autumn Herbic, Marley Calovich, Kaden Williams, and Taylor Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Helen Zaleuke, Edwin “Blackie” Herbic, and Esther Robertson. Glenn now shares a place in heaven with his great-granddaughter, Madie. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Alma. The family will greet friends, at the church beginning at 9:30 am until a Rosary prayer service at 10:30 am.
