Hallie Frances Fulmer, 94, of Derby, Kansas, formerly of Wamego and Chapman, died Monday, August 12, 2024, in Derby.
Hallie was born on August 18, 1929, in Liberty, Missouri, the daughter of Chester N. and Laura LaVern (Osburn) Taylor. She attended grade school and in 1947 graduated from Chapman High School.
Hallie worked most of her adult life as a secretary, first for the Superintendent of Dickenson County Schools in Abilene, then for the ASCS office in Westmoreland, and then Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She then took her skills to Kansas State University where she worked at the Recruitment Center and then the Biochemistry Department. She retired from there when she was 66 years old in 1995.
Hallie was an active person. She was an accomplished trumpet player and performed with the Wamego Community Band. She also was a member of the Lindwood Players in Derby and was actively playing into her mid-80s. She continued to play her trumpet for her own pleasure until the week before her death. She was a member of the Derby United Methodist Church. Hallie also loved to embroider and made quilts, tablecloths with matching napkins and baby quilts for all her family. She also loved working ceramics and made hundreds of pieces at Joe’s Ceramics. Each of her family members received numerous ceramic gifts. Hallie was an active observer of all her kid’s, grandkid’s and great-grandkid’s activities. It didn’t matter if it was a sporting event, a music concert, or a dance recital. She loved them all and never missed attending. For years she was a season ticket holder for K-State Basketball and an avid fan of the Kansas City Royals. She was also a wonderful pie cook and each fall would make over a hundred pies and freeze them. Her family knew that every holiday and family get together there was going to be plenty of delicious homemade pies. She was especially known for her peach pies and her fried chicken. Hallie raised a very large garden and loved canning and processing the produce. It was important to Hallie to always look nice. She dressed well and always had her hair, makeup and nails done. She also seemed to always have her dress, shoes and purse matching.
Hallie married Kenneth Kohrs on November 6, 1949, in Abilene. To their union three children were born: Steve, Connie, and Karen. Hallie later married John Fulmer on October 12, 1963, in Belvue. To their union, Kathy and John, Jr. were born.
