Helen Ann Powell

Helen Ann Powell, 78, a longtime resident of the St. George, Kansas area, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Good Shepherd Hospice of Manhattan.  

She was born on September 3, 1940 in Wamego, Kansas, the daughter of August J. and Hazel (Griffith) Dornbusch. She attended Greenwood Country School, District 25, and finished her elementary schooling at Louisville, KS. She graduated from Wamego High School in the class if 1958. Helen married Richard Dean Powell in Wamego, KS on June 26, 1960. They were married 55 years, making their home on School Creek Rd. of rural St. George. Richard preceded her in death in 2015.  She worked her entire career as an underwriter at Kansas Farm Bureau Insurance for over 40 years until retirement.

Helen enjoyed playing cards, bingo, going to the casinos, fishing on the family farm pond, and attending auctions and antiquing. She was also a great story teller.  She had been a member of the Wamego Senior Center, American Legion Post 17 Auxiliary of Manhattan, and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Her survivors include her brother, August J. Dornbusch, Jr. (Donna) of Lincoln, NE; two nephews: Michael Dornbusch (Sarah) of Fairway, KS, David Dornbusch (Keri) of Fisher, IL; a sister in-law, Sherry Duncan of St. George, KS; a brother in-law, Harold Fritzson, St. George, KS; and her close and dear friends Teresa and Jim Kelsey, who helped Helen for many years and in many ways.

She was also preceded in death by a brother Harold Dornbusch, and two sisters, Mary Fritzson and Dorothy Dawson.

Mrs. Powell has been cremated. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 23rd at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service.  Inurnment will follow in the Louisville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. George United Methodist Church, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.
