Laurel “Lonnie” Steere, 75, of Alta Vista died on Saturday June 23rd, 2018 in Abilene, KS.
Lonnie was born in rural Wabaunsee County, Kansas on November 13th, 1942 to Harold and Maxine (Peterson) Steere. Lonnie attended school in Alta Vista, Kansas, graduating from Alta Vista High School in 1960. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Emporia State University in 1964 and a Master’s degree in Education in 1970.
Lonnie taught Social Science and Spanish in Bennington, Medicine Lodge, Alma and the last 15 years of his career at Manhattan High School. He was a farmer and stockman in Alta Vista for his entire life.
Lonnie served two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was always proud of his military service.
Lonnie served on the Garfield Township for over 25 years and on the Wabaunsee County ASCS committee for 8 years. Lonnie was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Alta Vista.
Lonnie married Vicky Robinson on July 30th, 1967 in Shawnee, Kansas. Lonnie enjoyed traveling, reading and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
Lonnie is preceded in death by his wife, a daughter Stephanie Lee Steere and his parents Harold and Maxine Steere.
Lonnie is survived by a son Greg and his wife Charla of Alta Vista, 2 grandchildren Casen and Keely Steere, a sister Sonia Clark (Bill) of Alta Vista and a brother Stanley (Carolyn), who reside in Texas.
Graveside services for Lonnie will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Alta Vista Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to the Dickinson County Hospice and Village Manor of Abilene, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 126, Alma, KS 66401.
