Leah M. Atkinson, 90, of Westmoreland, KS and formerly of Kansas City, KS, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017 at the Westy Community Care Home. Leah was born January 16, 1927 in Hill City, KS, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Messer) Trowbridge. She attended schools in Coyville, KS and graduated from Coyville High School. On June 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Wilbur L. “Bud” Atkinson in Jetmore, KS. Soon after, they moved to the Kansas City area for employment and started to raise their family. Leah began working at the Turner School District, where she worked from 1957 thru 1961. She then began working at Electro-Dynamics of Mission, KS as a supervisor from 1961 until her retirement in 1992. She loved to take care of her family. She was a fantastic cook, loved to babysit her grandbabies and spend as much time with her family as possible. One of her favorite things was to spend the weekends with her family, starting each Memorial Day, at Council Grove Lake. She also enjoyed playing cards and putting puzzles together. Her survivors include: a son, Terry Atkinson (Janell) of Galena, MO; two daughters: Peggy Butterfield and, Penny Taylor (Gary) all of Kansas City, KS; 9 grandchildren: Wendy, Brady, Mark, Casey, Chris, Tony, Kary, Corey, and Kable; 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Bud Atkinson in 2009; an infant son Donald; two sisters: Mavis and Marie; and two brothers: Marvin and Bill. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego; with family greeting friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial with a graveside service will follow in White City Cemetery at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Westy Community Care Home, and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547.
