Martha C. Thomas, 91, of Wamego, Kansas, died Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center. She was a long-time resident of the community.
Martha was born June 6, 1932, near Holton, Kansas, the daughter of Charles E. and Effie L. (Carpenter) Moody. She attended local grade school and graduated in 1950 from Holton High School.
Martha married Kenneth E. Thomas on June 11, 1950, in Holton. For fifty-seven years they shared their lives together until Kenneth preceded her in death on October 18, 2007.
Martha worked for many years as a CNA and then as Activities Director at Valley Vista. She and Kenneth then moved to St. John, Kansas, where she was the activities director at the local nursing home for five years. They returned to Wamego after their retirement.
Martha’s family grew to five boys and three girls, and she was not only busy raising her family but also a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego and served as a Sunday School Teacher and participated in the ladies group. Martha’s faith meant everything to her. She also enjoyed raising a garden, flowers and reading.
Martha is survived by her children; Richard Thomas, Manhattan, Marsha Miller, Manhattan, Cheryl Brown, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Brenda Asbury (Rick), Wamego, Ronald Thomas (Eleanor), Topeka, Dale Thomas, St. John, and Bruce Thomas (Lesley), Haysville; her thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and her two great-great-grandchildren; plus many other relatives and friends. Martha was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Gary Thomas, her granddaughter, Summer Brook Thomas; her daughter-in-law, Bette Thomas; her sons-in-law, Bobby Brown and Martin Miller; as well as her sister, Dorothy.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:15 am, Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Wamego City Cemetery. Pastor Bruce Thomas will be officiating. The family will greet friends prior to the service, beginning at 10: 00 am, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home.
