Melvina Elizabeth Carver

June 25, 1925 — May 28, 2017

Melvina (Morton) Carver passed away peacefully on Sunday May 28, 2017 at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society in Wamego, KS.    Melvina was born to Melvin and Myrtle Perkins Morton on June 25, 1925.   She spent the first 9 years of her life on a farm south of Wamego.  The family moved into Wamego and she attended Wamego High School.  Melvina was a graduate of Kansas State University with a B.S. in Home Economics and Retailing in 1949.  She met Clyde Carver at a dance in Anderson Hall at Kansas State University and later they were married on September 11, 1949.  They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999.  With this union came a daughter, Karen (Carver) Jones of Wamego, KS and a son, Merlyn Carver of Yuba City, CA.    When first married, she and Clyde lived in Kansas City where she worked at Sears and Roebucks & Co. in the catalog department.  There she met her lifelong friend and bridge playing partner, Ann VanWagner.  The families have remained lifelong friends.   Clyde and Melvina moved to Wamego in 1962 when Clyde became a partner in the family car dealership, Morton Motor Company.  Melvina served as a Girl Scout leader, a Boy Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher.  She was very involved in the Methodist Woman’s Organization and in the Methodist Church.   She loved her family and especially her grandkids.  Heather and Joshua Jones, and Meryl Carver were the special blessings of her life and enjoyed many hours of games and fun with the grandkids.  One of her favorite memories was the shows that the grandkids would put on for the family.  She was blessed with great-grandchildren and they became the center of her world.  Later in life if she ever needed a smile all we had to do was bring those great-grandchildren up for a visit and her world exploded with smiles and happiness.  Family was the most important thing in her life, and the importance of family is what we have learned from her teachings and her life.  She enjoyed photography, genealogy and took many a trips with family and friends.   She is survived by her loving brother: Sonny (Lynne) Morton; a daughter: Karen (Carver) Jones; a son: Merlyn (Jill) Carver; 5 grandchildren: Heather Jones, Joshua (Jessica) Jones, Meryl (Blaine) Carver-Allmond, Danielle (Will) Fausel, Whitney Stutz; and 10 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Lillian, Will, Maverick, Amarri, Reagan, Knox, Betti, Aubree and Haylee.   Melvina was preceded in death by her husband Clyde in April of 2000, her sister Doris Mae Morton, parents Melvin and Myrtle Morton.   Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.  Burial will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery. Melvina will lie in-state Thursday, June 1st from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. with visitation following from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested for the Presbyterian Church or Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society of Wamego, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
