Robert “Bob” J. Simmer, 89, a lifelong resident of Wamego, KS, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Good Shepherd Hospice of Manhattan.
Bob was born September 26, 1929 in Wamego, the son of Frank J. and Cecelia F. (Umscheid) Simmer. He attended Wamego schools, graduating from Wamego High School.
On August 9, 1951, he married Elaine Ann Junod in Coal Creek, Kansas. Elaine preceded her in death on January 27, 2008. Bob enlisted into the U. S. Army in 1951, serving his country during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge in August of 1953. Following his return from his military service, he worked in the Civil Service as a mechanics supervisor and later as shop supervisor at Ft. Riley, Kansas for 38 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed working on cars, going dancing with Elaine, fun times at the casinos, traveling with Elaine in their motor-home, and spending time with his grandkids and attending their sporting events. In 2013, Bob enjoyed traveling to Washington D.C. with other war veterans and the Kansas Honor Flight-Wamego High School. He was also a past member of the Manhattan V.F.W. and American Legion Post 17, Manhattan.
His survivors include three sons: Frank Simmer (significant other, Robin), Tom Simmer (Maxine) of Hiawatha, KS, Pat Simmer (Sandy) of Wamego, KS; his daughter Coleen Falk of Alma, KS; a sister, Donna Jean Johnson, Wamego, KS; a brother, John Simmer of Wamego, KS; 9 grandchildren: Shawn, Chad, Josh, Jared, Robin, Heath, Luke, Colby and Dalton; and several great-great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two sons: Mike Simmer and Ed Simmer; a son in-law, Mark Falk; and 5 siblings: Joann, Jerry, Jimmy, Betty, and Bill.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, with burial to follow at Wamego City Cemetery. Family will great friends prior to the funeral, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. He will lie in-state beginning at 2:00 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to Kansas Honor Flight-Wamego High School, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
