Vera Roberta Ross, 78, of Wamego, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Via Christi Health Center in Manhattan. She was a long-time resident of the community. Vera was born on June 30, 1943, in Axtell, Kansas, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth Thomas Sunnenberg. She attended catholic school and graduated in 1961 in Baileyville. Vera worked for several years as a CNA in both hospitals and nursing homes. She also worked for Hy-Vee Supermarket. She loved working with the customers and was known for her friendliness. Vera loved to play Bingo and go to the casino. She was always willing to go shopping or to a garage sale. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed being a part of their lives. Vera was an avid KU fan. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Vera never knew a stranger. She enjoyed visiting and was always willing to lend a hand to someone who needed her. Bringing someone food or sending a card was common practice for her. Vera had a heart of gold. Vera married Thomas Lee Harcrow in 1965. They were later divorced. On August 10, 1975, Vera Married Kenneth Ross in Wamego. He survives at their home. She is also survived by her children; Ed Harcrow (Shelley), Wamego, Dean Harcrow (Janice), Hutchinson, and Kendra Messerly, Wamego; her grandchildren, Tommy Harcrow and Ashlyn Harcrow, both of Lakin, Edward Harcrow, Wamego, Jacob Harcrow, Tristan Harcrow, and Connor Harcrow, all of Hutchinson, and Dylan Ross (Katlyn Dorn), Wamego; her siblings, Rita Chauza, Douglas, Nebraska, Jerry Sunnenberg (Sharon), Joplin, Missouri, Anna Mae Slack, Wamego, and Josephine Wiggins, Marysville. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, Thomas, and her siblings, Donald Sunnenberg, Hank Sunnenberg, Vincent Sunnenberg, and Oscarine Sunneberg. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego, Kansas. Father Mike Peterson will be the Celebrant. Burial will follow at the St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery. Vera will lie-in-state on Monday, beginning at 3:00 pm at Campanella & Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. A Rosary prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm. They suggest memorial contributions to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and those may be sent in care of the funeral home.
