Vernon Joseph “Tink” Prockish, Sr., 90, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Saturday, February 25, 2023, at his home. He was a life-long resident of the area.
Vernon was born on October 10, 1932, in rural Flush, Kansas, the son of Leo Charles and Gertrude (Krouse) Prockish. He attended local grade schools and graduated in 1950 from Wamego High School. He then served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.
Vernon worked as a heavy equipment operator for Bayer Construction as well as a farmer and stockman, operating his own family farm operation. He was a member of the American Legion. Vernon loved sports and was an avid fan of K-State, the Royals and the Chiefs, but most of all he loved to attend his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. Vernon loved trips to the mountains and in his younger days enjoyed hunting and fishing. Over the years, he was seen regularly drinking coffee and swapping stories with his friends at the Short Stop or Co-op.
Vernon married Charlotte Hunt on May 25, 1952, in Westmoreland. After 58 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on November 7, 2010.
Vernon is survived by his children; Joe Prockish (Nancy), Westmoreland, Cindy Collins (Sam), Westmoreland, Tim Prockish (Anna), Salina, and Lori Buss (Bob), Westmoreland; his grandchildren, Todd (Christy), Mandy (Richard), Justin, Adam (Heidi), Kimberly (Robbie), Kassandra (Ryan), Ryan (Ashlee), Tyler (Brianna), and Trystan (Tayler); his great-grandchildren, Heidi, Taylor, Megan, Tregen, Jayden, Bentley, and Cade; and his great-great grandchildren, Ivy Jo, Emery and Aaliyah; and his brother, Delbert Prockish, Wamego. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Eugene Prockish, Margie Howard, Kenneth Prockish, Deloris Fleming, Marcella Prockish, and an infant brother.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, March 3, 2023, at Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Pastor Kaylie Ines will be officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Westmoreland City Cemetery. Vernon will lie-in-state on Thursday, beginning at 3:00 pm, and the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
