Virginia Hupe, 97, Wamego, KS passed away Tuesday, April 10th, 2018 from complications of pneumonia at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Ks.
Virginia was born November 16, 1920 in Belvue, Kansas to Currie and Relitha Wood.
She attended schools in Wamego and graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class at age 16. Following graduation she received a full scholarship to Grand Island Business College in Nebraska.
On July 10th, 1939 she married Orville Hupe. To this union they had four children, Carol Williams of Kansas City, John (Cindy) Hupe of Wamego, Norman (Jeanette) Hupe of Wamego and Julie (Jim) Appino of Wamego. She had nine grandchildren and thirteen great grand children who were her pride and joy.
She moved into her current home December 7th, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. She continued to live in her home until her recent illness. This home was the hub of family holiday gatherings.
Orville and Virginia started managing RW Milling Company in the late 1940s, purchasing the business in 1954. They continued to operate the business until their sons and daughter-in-laws joined them in the early 1980s.
Virginia was a charter member of the Wamego Dutch Mill Sweet Adelines, member and past Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, belonged to the Wamego Senior Center and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Huguenot Society.
Traveling and genealogy were enjoyed by Virginia. With her sister Helen, several trips were made to Virginia and Texas researching old records and meeting distant family members. She was an avid reader and bridge player. She liked playing games of all types with her family and was solving crossword puzzles well into her 90s.
Virginia was also a caretaker to many. She was at her husband’s side throughout a long and difficult illness and helped care for her daughter-in-law and sister during their last days. She wasn't a public figure and served quietly from the sidelines, lovingly taking care of her family in any way needed.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Orville, son Norman, sister Helen, brother Harry, sister Maryellen, infant brother John Robert, and daughter-in-law Cindy.
