Ruth Ann Miller, age 80, of Wamego, passed away at Good Shepherd Hospice House on October 30, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Ruth was born on September 14, 1943, in Clinton, OK, with deeper roots in Corn, USA. She was the daughter of Pete and Elizabeth (Toews) Sawatzky.
She attended Corn High School, graduating in 1961. She attended Tabor College and graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology, chemistry, and music. Ruth married Roland Miller on September 11, 1965, in Corn, OK. He survives of the home.
Ruth worked as a medical technologist in Newton, KS, for forty years. She also proudly operated two successful bed and breakfast-establishments in Newton, KS, the Prairie Oasis, and the Campus Cottage for ten years. Ruth enjoyed providing hospitality and connecting to all she cared for; she was known for always offering a cold glass of water and good conversation. She was a faithful caretaker to her family and the community she served.
At four years old, Ruth learned to play the piano by ear; throughout her life, she enjoyed playing piano for her family and friends. Ruth was involved in the music and hospitality ministries at Koerner Heights Church, Newton, KS, before moving to Wamego 11 years ago. Upon moving to Wamego, Ruth played for numerous churches in the Wamego area and enjoyed playing at Valley Vista for the residents. Ruth also enjoyed musicals in Branson, Missouri, where she shared many shows with her husband, Roland. She especially enjoyed family-oriented musicals and gospel music and often used music to express her thoughts and feelings. She liked playing table games with her family; she often played Pegs and Jokers and Rook and Quiddler games. Ruth loved to visit and especially loved her family and grandchildren. Ruth had a strong dedication to her faith and love for God. In trying times, her faith pulled her and her family through. Her commitment to faith, family, and friendship followed her throughout her life.
Ruth is survived by her Husband, Roland Miller, of Wamego; Sons, Darin (Heather) Miller, of Wamego; Ryan (Ricarda) Miller, of Olathe, KS; daughter, Robyn Walter, of Germany; Son-In-Law, Rolly Walter, of Spain; and ten Grand Children, Eli Miller, of Wamego, KS; Ben Miller, of Kansas City; Sammie Miller, of Wamego, KS; Peter Miller, of Wamego, KS; Jack Walter, of Spain; Lucy Walter, of Spain; Anne Walter, of Germany; Eddie Walter, of Spain; Jeremiah Miller, of Phoenix AZ; and Alethea Miller, of Los Angelas, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Elizabeth (Toews) Sawatzky, her brother, Donald Sawatzky, and her twin sister, Clarice Sawatzky.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Cross Point Community Church 612 E. 24th Highway, Wamego, KS, with Pastor Steve Ratliff officiating. The family invites friends and family for a luncheon following the funeral service at the Cross Point Community Church reception room. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Iron Clad, 427 Lincoln Ave, Wamego, KS, with family greeting friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Graveside burial will take place at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2023, in Newton, Kansas, at Eastlawn Cemetery, 5920 NW Rd Newton KS, with refreshments and dessert to follow, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Dyck Arboretum of The Plains, 177 W Hickory St, Hesston, KS 67062.
